Gene Hoglan mp3s

Gene Hoglan is heavy. About 300 pounds heavy.

What I liked about Hoglan live was how tight he was with the music, he had that accuracy in phrasing that is good to listen to. He's a big guy playing mostly left hand lead and very centered.

Yeah, he is something else live. He's got pretty good coordination and he kept it together through the changes and was in control. he plays sorta like Rod Morgenstein, I guess that's a close analogy.

Does Morgenstein play open-handed on a right side kit? From what I saw, I would liken him more to a white, death metal Dennis Chambers. [img]wink.gif[/img]

No, I sorta think the way he plays, the way he breaks up patterns between his hands and the interesting ways that Morgenstein uses 3:2 between his hands.

I heard he had singing lessons with Suzanne Pleshette.

Nice to see this thread. I've mentioned Gene along with Tomas Haake before, and they're both excellent players. (both are ultra nice guys, too) Yes, most speed/thrash/death metal's complexity lies in the sheer speed, but there's often more to it than that. (though the effortless use of speed with some of these guys is downright exhausting). Weckl mentioned in his clinic here that he's amazed with many of the guys who play this type of stuff for that very reason. I would like to see all of the Jazz/Fusion cats who rip on Metal try to play it half as well as the Metal players do.
